IT & C SMART NEW CITIES

Two of the most powerful drivers of change within modern economies are the explosion of digital technologies and the shift toward sustainable development. Both require us to rethink the nature of goods and services; both have the capacity to transform the relationship between governments, companies, citizens and consumers.”

“Over the next decade or so sustainable development will constitute one of the biggest opportunities in the history of commerce.”

The Information Technology industry (hardware, software and services) has provided many tools to help generate and process data, communicate globally, and improve productivity. However, all the rapid advances in this sector has not made our society more sustainable.

There is potential for IT to transform modern business into a more efficient, cyclical, networked, and sustainability-oriented system that pays returns to a “triple bottom line,” through economic, ecological, and social prosperity.

As a growing number of multinational corporations are assessing how to become more focused on sustainability issues, the IT sector has an opportunity to become a sustainability-oriented solutions provider, both for its clients and for its own operations. The question is what efforts will be first undertaken in exploring integration of its products and practices with those of sustainability

Egyptian IT market overview

Through years of investment and regulatory reform, Egypt has successfully nurtured one of the most competitive and successful ICT economies in the world. Already an ICT leader in the MENA region, Egypt is ranked 4th worldwide in A.T. Kearney’s 2011 Global Services Location Index, with the sector accounting for almost 4% of GDP, over US$ 10 billion of total investment from some 5500 companies in 2013, and an annual growth rate of around 13%.

There is also huge potential for growth. Almost 40 million Egyptians regularly surf the internet, and there are more than 200,000 highly qualified and multilingual professionals working in the ICT sector, yet PC penetration still remains low. Egypt is already the destination of choice for multinationals seeking to establish cost effective product development and call centers, leading the way in developing new high tech industry clusters.

The Government has set a target of doubling the share of ICT in the national economy to 8.5% by 2020, creating 250,000 new jobs in the process. The Government is committed to supporting the growth of an Egyptian Digital Society and capitalizing on the country’s geographical location to establish itself as a Global Digital Hub.
